The autonomous John Deere 8R Series tractor will be available this year.
At a press conference at CES 2022 in Las Vegas, John Deere introduced an 8R Series tractor, equipped with John Deere cultivator and GPS, that can operate fully autonomously. It is ready for series production. The autonomous tractor will become available later in 2022.
Six pairs of cameras provide 360-degree obstacle detection and calculate distances. Pixels from camera images are analyzed in 100ths of milliseconds and determine whether the machine continues driving or stops. The position of the tractor is also determined continuously, to a precision of 2.5 cm.

The operator drives the autonomous tractor to the field and the operation is started via the John Deere Operations Center Mobile app. The driver does not need to be present while working and can monitor the tractor through the app. The app features a live video connection, photos, data and measurements. Working speed and machine settings can be adjusted remotely via the app. In case of deviations or malfunctions, the driver receives a notification.

According to John Deere, autonomous tractors and machines will help farmers to provide food for the growing world population in the future. In this way, the growing food demand can be met with less personnel, with less available land and in less time, under varying conditions.
