High-precision GNSS technology strengthens positioning for field robots, autonomous tractors, and smart implements
MHexagon AB, a global provider of digital reality and autonomous solutions, has completed the acquisition of Septentrio, a Belgian specialist in high-precision GNSS positioning technology. The move strengthens Hexagon’s offering for autonomous agricultural applications, including autosteer retrofit kits, self-driving tractors, robotic implements, and precision spraying systems.
Septentrio’s GNSS receivers are known for their centimeter-level accuracy, signal robustness, and ability to function in challenging environments—key requirements for autonomous systems operating on farms. The company’s technology is already used by several ag-robot manufacturers to enable row-level navigation, obstacle avoidance, and implement guidance.
By integrating Septentrio into its Autonomous Solutions division, Hexagon aims to accelerate the development and deployment of resilient, high-precision positioning tools for autonomous farming equipment.
“Combining Hexagon’s broad positioning portfolio with Septentrio’s innovative GNSS platforms will allow us to better support mission-critical autonomy in agriculture,” said Gordon Dale, President of Hexagon’s Autonomous Solutions division.
Septentrio will continue to serve its existing base of OEM customers, which includes several developers of autonomous field robots and smart implements. Its portfolio includes GNSS modules tailored for agricultural machinery, supporting real-time kinematic (RTK) corrections, PPP (Precise Point Positioning), and anti-jamming technologies that ensure reliable operation even under tree cover or near obstructions.
“We see a strong future for advanced positioning in agriculture,” said Antoon De Proft, CEO of Septentrio. “Joining Hexagon helps us scale our technology and reach more ag-tech developers focused on automation, efficiency, and sustainability.”
The acquisition follows Hexagon’s previous investment in GNSS technology, including the acquisition of NovAtel in 2007. With the addition of Septentrio, Hexagon further solidifies its ability to deliver end-to-end autonomy solutions for the agricultural sector—supporting the transition from assisted steering to full machine autonomy.
