Taranis adds weed identification and herbicide prescriptions at scale to its platform.

Taranis’ platform update is to provide farmers with the tools necessary to identify numerous types of weeds, including the most common varieties in the Broadleaf and Grass families. Taranis AI focused especially on some notorious species water hemp, blackgrass, Palmer’s amaranth and more, in addition to pinpointing the best prescriptions possible.

“With our team of 120 expert agronomists continuously training our AI Data Sets, Taranis now has the most comprehensive weed identification system of its kind,” said Ofir Schlam, CEO and Co-founder of Taranis.

Combat crop yield

“We are making it easier than ever for farmers to identify thousands of weeds, furthering our mission to enable service providers, land managers, and producers to pre-emptively combat crop yield loss due to weeds, insects, disease, and more,” said Ofir Schlam.

Automatic prescriptions

Taranis’ newest product feature generates automated weed reports, builds performance zones for accurate herbicide spraying, and provides automatic prescriptions to be applied per detection.

The company’s technology is to help to slow down the evolution of weeds, utilising early detection, precise prescriptions for each plot of land, and treatments for all kinds of weeds. With a more precise detection of herbicides, Taranis’ latest solution will enable both chemical companies to extend the lifetime of precious molecules and help farmers to increase productivity and protect yields.

$ 20 million funding for Taranis

The launch of the Taranis’ weed identification feature comes on the heels of its Series B funding, which raised $ 20 million for the company. Taranis targets high volume commodity crops such as corn, cotton, sugarcane, soybean, wheat, potatoes, which account for 70% of global crop volumes. The company currently services large farmers in US, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, Ukraine and Australia.

$ 190 billion in crop loss due to weeds

Worldwide, farmers lose productivity due to weeds in an accumulated $ 190 billion, roughly 10% of crop production. Moreover, pesticide resistance takes a tremendous toll on the agricultural sector, costing farmers and other industry players roughly $ 10 billion a year in the US alone. With over 8,000 species of known weeds, it is critical for farmers to identify which species are present in their fields to choose the right herbicide before unnecessary damage is done.
Taranis’ new feature comes at a time when farmers are increasingly using herbicides. Overuse of pesticides has led to the creation of pesticide-resistant weeds ultimately causing farmers to increase their efforts, wasting both time and money.
