A compact crop spraying tip designed to achieve very low levels of drift across a wide range of operating pressures has been developed by Pentair Hypro for weed control in agricultural field crop.

The Ultra Lo-Drift (ULD) has replaced the long-established DriftBeta with a more robust and durable structure, says Pentair Hypro, but familiar air induction technology to minimise drift.

Different application rates

It is said to be capable of maintaining good spray pattern uniformity across operating pressures from 1.4 to 8 bar (20-115psi), giving plenty of scope for different application rates and sprayer operating speeds.

Drawing in air

Drift reduction within the compact dimensions of the stubby tip is achieved by drawing in air through 2 inlets to a chamber where the resulting drop in pressure causes a large proportion of bigger droplets to be formed as the liquid is discharged from the tip’s outlet.

90% drift reduction standard

According to Pentair Hypro information, the droplet size spectrum meets the 90% drift reduction standard (versus a standard flat-fan tip) defined by JKI, Germany’s national test and certification organisation.

Higher water volumes

The company emphasises that the tip should be used with higher water volumes – typically 200-litres/hectare (21 gallons/acre) – in order to achieve good target coverage because of the reduction in the number of droplets produced.

Slightly lower boom heights

The 05 (brown) delivers this volume at 10kph/2.0 bar (6mph/29psi) and 12kph/3.0 bar (7mph/43psi) and at 120 degrees, the tapered flat fan spray pattern allows slightly lower boom heights to be used while maintaining the correct overlap from one nozzle to the next.

Available in 8 sizes

Pentair Hypro’s ULD tip is moulded in hard-wearing polyacetal and is available in 8 sizes from 015 to 08, with the 04 to 06 sizes being approved in the United States for application of Dicamba and 2-4,D herbicides to control broadleaf weeds.

It is produced to ISO standard colours and sizes to fit regular and TwinCap nozzle bodies, and is also available as a one-piece FastCap.
