Under the name Abundant Robots, Wavemaker Labs wants to develop autonomous fruit harvesting harvest robots at a fraction of current costs.
The startup incubator Wavemaker Labs Asia (AgTech-focused division of Wavemaker Labs’ overall brand) has purchased the intellectual property of Abundant Robotics, a former developer of fruit harvesting robots based in California that was founded in 2016 and ceased operations in 2021. Last year, the company stated it was unable to develop the market traction necessary to support its business during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wavemaker Labs has now relaunched the company under the name Abundant Robots and aims to raise up to $ 20 million in seed capital via equity crowdfunding site WAX.
Bolstering Wavemaker Labs’ AgTech portfolio which already includes Future Acres, Abundant Robots aims to create innovative and easy-to-adapt equipment to help farmers maximize efficiency when harvesting without compromising the quality of the food.
According to Wavemaker Labs, Abundant Robots will be a company of its own, part of Wavemaker Labs’ portfolio. The autonomous fruit harvesting robots are not yet commercially available, a spokesperson said. “Now that Wavemaker Labs has acquired the intellectual property from Abundant Robotics, they are reviewing the current technology to build an MVP prototype – at a fraction of the current build cost – that is more scalable and profitable. The team is laser-focused on ramping up Abundant Robots’ business operations and have started discussions with industry experts to ensure the new version meets and exceeds the needs of farmers and orchards.”
