Remotely operated system offers 24/7 field work and hourly pricing model for labor-challenged growers
Carbon Robotics has introduced the Carbon AutoTractor, a new autonomy kit designed to convert existing John Deere 6R and 8R series tractors into remotely monitored, autonomous machines. The system addresses growing labor shortages by enabling around-the-clock operation for tasks like laser weeding, mowing, mulching, and discing.
The AutoTractor solution includes the Carbon Autonomy Kit and a Remote Operations Control Center (ROCC). The autonomy kit installs on existing tractors within 24 hours, without requiring permanent modifications. The system bolts onto the vehicle and connects via standard in-cab harnesses. A control interface is mounted on the window, allowing the operator to easily toggle between manual and autonomous modes.
“It bolts on, plugs into the cab, and can be turned on or off from a simple box mounted inside the cab,” said Paul Mikesell, CEO of Carbon Robotics. Farmers can switch between autonomous and manual driving at any time, giving flexibility for seasonal workflows and operator preference.
Key features:
RTK GPS and 360° camera vision Radar-based safety sensors Remote, mobile, and physical e-stop options Satellite-based low-latency connectivity for real-time remote driving The system is optimized for Carbon’s LaserWeeder, automatically adjusting tractor speed based on weed type, size, and density—boosting weeding efficiency by up to 20% compared to manual operation.
While a fixed purchase price has not been disclosed, Carbon Robotics confirmed the AutoTractor will operate under a per-hour pricing model, typically ranging from $15 to $25 per hour, depending on local labor rates. The model is intended to be cost-competitive with traditional machine operators while enabling 24/7 deployment, no breaks, and no travel time.
Remote operators in Carbon’s control center receive practical training on farm workflows to ensure safe and efficient remote driving. The company plans to expand AutoTractor’s capabilities to additional field operations over time.
