New YaraIrix app measures nitrogen needs in cereals

Fertiliser and N-sensor supplier Yara has developed an app that enables your smartphone to measure nitrogen needs of winter wheat, oilseed rape, maize and barley during early growth stages.

Yara already markets its handheld N-tester tool for decades and now basically brings the N-tester technology to smartphone with the free YaraIrix app. It uses your smartphone camera to measure chlorophyll levels and then determine nitrogen demands of different cereal crops in early growth stages. For determining nitrogen demands in later growth stages, you need to buy additional hardware.

Additional camera lens

The app determines the nitrogen needs of winter wheat, oilseed rape, maize and barley during early growth stages and provides an instant recommendation for how much fertiliser the crop needs.

Smartphone becomes nitrogen sensor

With the new N-Tester Clip, which is a small lens clip for your smartphone camera, you can transform the camera into a nitrogen sensor for determining nitrogen demands of cereal crops in later growth stages. Initially the N-Tester Clip is available as part of the YaraIrix Innovator Program which means that only farmers who are members of that program can test it and provide feedback prior to market launch.

€ 19 per month

The original N-Tester has evolved into the N-Tester BT that now connects to smartphones via Bluetooth. Yara describes this device as ideal for second to fourth fertiliser dressings in abovementioned crops as well as in winter and spring barley, winter rye and winter triticale in later growth stages. It also saves historical data and is available from € 19 per month.
