Brazilian agriculture connected with ConectarAGRO

ConectarAgro is initiated by CNH Industrial, together with with AGCO, Bayer, Jacto, Nokia, Solinftec, TIM and Trimble. ConectarAgro is to enable rural producers to fully benefit from today’s precision farming, digital and automated technological resources, whilst gaining access to a full range of new products and services enabled by connectivity, which will result in business optimisation.

‘ConectarAGRO key to Brazilian agribusinesses’

“The system will provide connectivity for the entire farm fleet, bringing together equipment, people and other devices under a single system,” said Gregory Riordan, Director of Digital Technologies at CNH Industrial, South America. “In this sense, ConectarAGRO will be key to Brazilian agribusinesses as they aim to further increase their global productivity and competitiveness.”

“Today, even with the increased level of automation and technology available to improve the farmers operation, there is still a limitation to exploit its full potential due to a lack of connectivity in rural areas. Connectivity is the key to drive data based solutions and insights to take farming to the next level as well as a way of managing problems that occur in real time rather than after they have already happened,” says Gregory Riordan.

New tools to help optimise farm operations

Additionally, connectivity will also enable new tools which can be easily implemented to help the farmers optimise their operation, according to Riordan. “Ultimately the ConectarAGRO initiative is promoting a solution that will be the “bridge” from today’s farming to a new era of a digital farming.”

Currently there are many tech tools available that can be deployed in a limited form due to the lack of connectivity.

Currently there are many tech tools available that can be deployed in a limited form due to the lack of connectivity, including precision farming, fleet management, farmer advisory tools and weather monitoring, says Riordan.

“With these tools the farmer can plan his activities with more accuracy, avoiding wasting resources (on fuel and maintenance, for example) and increase efficiency. The ConectarAGRO initiative aims to show farmers a way to enable this through a solution which is open, accessible and simple to use.”

More freedom and flexibility for the farmer

ConectarAGRO will promote open and standardised technologies, allowing more freedom and flexibility for the farmer, the ultimate user of these technologies. According to CNH Industrial, this concept is what sets ConectarAGRO apart from other technological solutions already available – most of which follow a “closed” logic therefore limiting interoperability of multiple systems, requiring higher investments and complicating their large scale implementation.

Each company involved in ConectarAGRO – CNH, AGCO, Bayer, Jacto, Nokia, Solinftec, TIM and Trimble – will contribute its expertise and market experience to help create a favorable ecosystem and improve and develop conditions for connectivity in the sector.

“There will be no joint development programs, nor production or marketing of equipment, products or services by these companies, which will continue to operate independently, without combining economic activities or sharing risks or results”, says CNH Industrial.

Costs of infrastucture installation

A farmer who wants to better understand how to connect his farm can contact any of the companies involved in the ConectarAGRO initiative, says Gregory Riordan. “According to the telecommunications company (carrier) that supports ConectarAGRO, the cost of infrastructure installation can be compared to 15 to 30 kg of soybeans (1/4 or 1/2 sac) per hectare, depending on the characteristics of the area that will be covered.”
