With support from the first Regio Deal Noord-Limburg, the Dutch government, the Noord-Limburg region, and the Province of Limburg are investing over €2.5 million in a Robotics Lab at the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. The province announced this in a recent press release.

Starting in 2025, this facility will serve as a breeding ground for innovation and collaboration. It will focus on robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and precision agriculture.

Workspace and research facility

Developed by Maastricht University (UM) in collaboration with various regional partners, the Robotics Lab will function as an workspace and research facility. The goal is to bring together researchers, students, and (local) entrepreneurs. Together, they can develop innovative solutions for current challenges in the agricultural sector. Examples include disease and weed detection in crops and mechanical harvesting.

Practical Robotics for AgricultureThe Robotics Lab is a key component of the broader growth plan for Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. This aims to position the region as a leading knowledge hub for agritech and future farming. The Province of Limburg views this investment as an essential step in strengthening the regional ecosystem of businesses, knowledge institutions, and governments.

First phase

The first phase of the Robotics Lab includes:

  • Establishing a physical facility equipped with robotics, vision, and AI technology;
  • Connecting vocational and higher education programs (MBO and HBO) to robotics, fostering a multilevel community;
  • Creating an agritech community to facilitate knowledge and experience sharing;Hosting networking and knowledge-sharing events to promote collaboration and innovation.

Deputy Elianne Demollin-Schneiders, responsible for Regio Deals, stated: “With this facility, we are not only building a strong infrastructure for research and development. We are also investing in the future of our region. By focusing on technology and talent development across all educational levels, we contribute to future-proof food security in Limburg.”
