In recent years, British machinery manufacturer JCB has developed a hydrogen combustion engine, which has now been officially approved. The RDW was the first authority to grant approval.

JCB invested approximately €115 million over a 3-year period in the development of the hydrogen combustion engine. A team of 150 engineers worked diligently on the project. The JCB hydrogen engine has now received type approval for sale in Europe, with certification in other regions expected later this year.

RDW grants first approval

The RDW was the first authority to officially certify the engine. This was followed by approvals in other European countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Poland, and Finland.

To date, more than 130 test engines have been built. These are intended for backhoe loaders, telehandlers, and generators.

‘Certification enables sale and use of hydrogen engine’

JCB executive Lord Anthony Bamford expressed his enthusiasm for the certification of the JCB hydrogen engine. “JCB has demonstrated in recent years that hydrogen is a viable solution for zero-emission construction and agricultural machinery. This certification paves the way for the sale and use of hydrogen engines in the United Kingdom and across Europe. It is a fantastic start to the year, and I am especially proud of our team of British engineers who have worked tirelessly to achieve this milestone,” said Bamford.

JCB plans to bring the hydrogen engine to market this year.
