Odd.Bot launches its Maverick weeding robot and Weader weed picking arm for in-row weeding in (organic) carrots, onions and chicory. One Maverick is to replace up to 10 human weeders.

After initiating its developments nearly exactly six years ago, Dutch start-up Odd.Bot is now ready to introduce its automated mechanical weeding tools in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands. The company offers both turn-key farmer ready solutions by means of its Maverick weeding robot equipped with two or three Weader weed picking arms as well as single Weader arms.

Replace up to 80% labour

According to the manufacturer, field robot Maverick is able to perform fully autonomous day and night mechanical in-row weeding. Initially targeting (organic) carrots, onions and chicory with more crops to follow. Each robot can carry up to three Weader weeding arms and is to replace 80 per cent of all manual weeding for up to 10 manual weeders per unit. The Weader is a robotic delta arm with 3 degrees of freedom. Maverick is lightweight, just 400 kilograms, and can drive up to 600 metres per hour. The field robot is powered by one up to three 24-volt batteries with a capacity/range of 8 hours each. This way, weeding one hectare takes up to 16 hours. It uses sensor-fusing stereo-vision, visual odometry, inertial measurement and crop-line following to navigate and is able to turn autonomously on headlands.

Odd.Bot plans to have 20 units in the field next year focusing on Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands for now. Maverick is available from €95,000. Single Weader weeding arms sell for €32,000.
